Rabab Fatima Appointed as UN Secretary-General’s New Special Representative for Afghanistan

The United Nations has announced that Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Bangladeshi diplomat Rabab Fatima as his new Special Representative for Afghanistan and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

Ms. Fatima will succeed Roza Otunbayeva. The UN Secretary-General praised Otunbayeva for her dedicated service and also expressed appreciation for the work of UNAMA Deputy Head Georgette Gagnon, who is currently serving as the Acting Head of the mission in Afghanistan.

According to the UN Spokesperson’s Office, Rabab Fatima brings more than 30 years of experience in national and international public service, including bilateral and multilateral diplomacy, policymaking, advocacy, and programme planning and implementation.

She previously served as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and as the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States
