The Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations has welcomed the appointment of Rabab Fatima by UN Secretary-General António Guterres as the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
The Mission stated that Ms. Fatima assumes this responsibility at a critical time, as the United Nations is conducting a review of its mission in Afghanistan. It highlighted her extensive diplomatic experience and leadership record within the UN system as important strengths for the role.
In its statement, the Mission called on the new Special Representative to strengthen UNAMA’s efforts in facilitating political engagement, coordinating humanitarian assistance, protecting civilians, monitoring the human rights situation, and supporting the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Afghan people.
The Afghan Mission emphasized that the United Nations’ engagement with Afghanistan should remain principled and be guided by respect for human rights, inclusive governance, and international commitments.
The Mission expressed hope that, under Ms. Fatima’s leadership, UNAMA will continue to play an effective role in supporting peace and stability in Afghanistan, promoting human rights, and advancing an Afghan-led and inclusive political process.
