Afghanistan Journalists Center: Pressure on Media Freedom Increased in 2025

Today, March 17 is observed as National Journalists’ Day in Afghanistan, a day dedicated to recognizing the value of media, freedom of expression, and the efforts of journalists.

On this occasion, the Afghanistan Journalists Center, in its latest report, stated that media freedom in the country faced serious restrictions and increasing censorship in 2025.

According to the report, at least 207 cases of violations against media freedom were recorded over the past year, including arrests of journalists, threats, and violence. This marks an increase of more than 20 percent compared to the previous year.

The report adds that the Taliban-led administration has expanded control over media, extended bans on broadcasting images of living beings to more provinces, and forced dozens of media outlets to shut down.

It also highlights concerns over restrictions on female journalists, forced confessions of detained reporters, and severe financial challenges faced by media organizations.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center has called on the authorities to respect the fundamental rights of journalists and media and to provide a safe environment for freedom of expression.

National Journalists’ Day is being observed at a time when journalists continue to demand their basic rights, freedom of expression, and a secure working environment to carry out their professional duties without fear.
