Two-Day Public Holiday Announced in Unstable Islamabad Over Possible Iran–US Talks

A two-day public holiday has been announced in the capital of the unstable Pakistan, Islamabad, as authorities tighten security ahead of possible peace talks between Iran and the United States.

Local officials say all roads leading to key areas of the city have been closed to traffic and extensive security measures have been put in place.

According to them, the move has been taken to ensure the safe conduct of the potential diplomatic talks.

Meanwhile, most federal government institutions in Pakistan are also closed on Thursday.

However, the announcement of the holiday and the security restrictions has also affected the daily life of residents. Local people say the road closures have made movement difficult, commercial activities have slowed down, and many people are unable to easily reach their workplaces and health centers.

The expected talks are likely to be led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and US Vice President J. D. Vance. However, deep differences remain between the two sides over key issues.

On the other hand, some Iranian media outlets have denied reports that Iran’s negotiating delegation has arrived in Islamabad. According to a report by Mehr News Agency, a source said the talks will not begin until the United States fulfills its commitments and Israel stops its attacks on Lebanon.

At the same time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed his government to begin direct talks with Lebanon.

Western analysts believe Netanyahu may have moved toward negotiations under pressure from US President Donald Trump.

Experts say that while Pakistan is trying to ensure security for this important diplomatic meeting as the host country, the extensive security measures and road closures are likely to have short-term negative impacts on people’s daily lives and the local economy.
