The International Crisis Group has raised fresh concerns about Afghanistan’s future. In a recent analysis, the group said that levels of armed conflict and overall violence in Afghanistan have declined, while the Taliban’s central control remains strong. However, it said the Taliban government continues to face serious challenges.
The report says restrictions on women and girls’ access to education, employment and public life have contributed to Afghanistan’s international isolation and remain a major obstacle to the Taliban’s international legitimacy.
According to the report, recent tensions with Pakistan have disrupted trade and transit, creating difficulties for Afghanistan’s access to international markets. It also says that declining international aid and Afghanistan’s economic isolation have contributed to worsening food insecurity.
The International Crisis Group also points to growing signs of armed activity and local dissatisfaction in northern Afghanistan, particularly in Badakhshan.
The group says addressing restrictions on women’s rights, improving relations with the international community, reducing tensions with Pakistan and tackling the country’s economic problems will be crucial to Afghanistan’s future.
