Pakistan steps up security after air strikes on Afghan territory

According to Reuters, Pakistan has tightened security across the country and arrested dozens of suspects following air strikes carried out against targets in Afghanistan.

Pakistani officials told Reuters that security forces are on high alert “to prevent any possible attacks.” Pakistan carried out the air strikes over the weekend, saying they targeted militant hideouts, while local sources in Afghanistan reported that residential homes were also hit.

Islamabad has accused Kabul of allowing militant groups to use Afghan territory as safe havens, a claim that Kabul has rejected, insisting that militancy is Pakistan’s internal problem.

Meanwhile, Pakistani and Afghan forces exchanged fire along the border on Tuesday. The Taliban said Pakistani forces initiated the shooting.

At the same time, several militant attacks have taken place inside Pakistan, causing significant casualties among Pakistani security forces.

Pakistani authorities say security forces have intensified search and intelligence-based operations to prevent possible retaliatory attacks, and that “dozens of suspected militants, their supporters and facilitators have been arrested.”

Sources told Reuters that Pakistan’s intelligence agencies have issued warnings about a possible increase in militant attacks in the coming days. Urban centres, markets, security installations and places of worship could be potential targets.

Data from the global conflict monitoring group Armed Conflict Location & Event Data shows that militant violence in Pakistan has been rising steadily since 2022. The number of attacks increased from 658 in 2022 to 2,425 in 2025, while attacks claimed by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan rose from 118 to 838 over the same period.
