Naseer Ahmad Faiq: Rising Pakistan–Taliban tensions are deepening Afghanistan’s crisis

In a statement to the UN Security Council on Monday, Afghanistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Naseer Ahmad Faiq, said that the escalation of tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban has added a new and dangerous dimension to Afghanistan’s ongoing crisis and has led to heavy civilian casualties.

Faiq referred to an attack on a civilian health facility in Kabul and said that, according to reports, dozens of people were killed and injured in the incident.

He added, “We strongly condemn all attacks that harm civilians, destroy vital infrastructure, and violate Afghanistan’s national sovereignty. We call on the Security Council to condemn these attacks and prevent the recurrence of such incidents.”

The Afghan representative stressed that no security consideration, however legitimate, can justify actions that endanger civilian lives or violate the principles of the UN Charter and international humanitarian law.

According to Faiq, “Today Pakistan itself is facing the same problems that Afghanistan warned about years ago.” He said that the Afghan people should not bear the cost of Pakistan’s failed policies and the actions of the Taliban, nor become victims of regional and proxy rivalries between Pakistan and India.

In conclusion, he urged Pakistan, as a neighboring country and a member of the Security Council, to support an inclusive, sustainable, and political process—one that allows the people of Afghanistan to decide their own future.
