Federal Court Orders Resumption of SIV Visa Processing for Afghan Allies in the U.S.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has reported that a U.S. federal court has ordered the Trump administration to immediately resume processing Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) applications for former Afghan allies.

According to the IRC, this ruling brings renewed hope for thousands of Afghan applicants who had been left in prolonged uncertainty.

Judge Tanya Chutkan, in her decisive ruling, stated that the indefinite suspension and halt of these applications constituted a clear violation of congressional directives and previous judicial decisions. She emphasized that the Trump administration cannot unilaterally halt this critical process and must be accountable for the safety of its former allies.

Under this ruling, the Trump administration is required to process the backlog of applications according to a clear and specific timeline. The court also ordered that the review and adjudication of SIV applications be conducted in a “timely manner” to protect applicants from potential risks.
