UNICEF says that more than 2.6 million girls in Afghanistan have been denied secondary education over the past five years.
According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), girls who are out of school face a number of protection risks, including child labour, abuse, early marriage, and gender-based violence.
UNICEF says that despite restrictions on education, the organization continues to support education in Afghanistan.
According to UNICEF data, in 2025, more than 3.7 million children in public schools benefited from emergency education support, 442,000 children took part in community-based learning programs, 66 percent of whom were girls, and 232 schools were built or rehabilitated.
UNICEF has called on the Taliban government to lift restrictions on education and allow all girls and women to return to schools and universities immediately.
