UN: Human rights situation in Pakistan is concerning

The UN Committee Against Torture, in its latest report, has described the human rights situation in Pakistan as concerning and has criticized the country over its treatment of Afghan refugees.

The report states that, under the 2023 “Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Plan,” Pakistan has forcibly expelled hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees. The committee also highlighted reports of police harassment, arbitrary arrests, and intimidation of Afghan refugees.

Furthermore, the report expressed concern over cases of torture, enforced disappearances, and arbitrary detention targeting journalists, civil activists, and political opponents. It urged Pakistan to stop human rights violations and bring those responsible to justice.
