The United Nations Human Rights Office has called on the Taliban authorities to immediately and unconditionally release all detained journalists in Afghanistan. The office stressed that press freedom is a fundamental human right and must be protected in all circumstances.
In this regard, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, Richard Bennett, has also called for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained journalists.
The United Nations says that supporting independent media and ensuring the safety of Afghan journalists is vital for the country’s future.
Meanwhile, the Taliban authorities have not yet issued an official response on the matter, but they have previously claimed to support journalists and respect media freedom in Afghanistan.
