OCHA: Floods Affect Tens of Thousands of People Across 31 Provinces in Afghanistan

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in its latest report that from March 26 to April 6, heavy rains and floods affected 31 provinces, 165 districts, and 546 villages across Afghanistan.

According to the report, more than 73,000 people have been affected by these natural disasters. Among them, 93 people lost their lives, 181 were injured, and four others remain missing.

OCHA added that the floods destroyed more than 9,000 houses, thousands of which were completely washed away. In addition, around 15,000 jeribs of agricultural land were damaged, and more than 500 livestock were killed.

The report states that the eastern parts of the country, particularly Nangarhar Province, suffered the most damage, followed by the southern and western provinces.

OCHA stressed that although the delivery of aid has begun, so far only around 8,000 people have received assistance, while the needs remain extensive. According to the report, cash assistance is considered the most urgent need for affected people in Samangan Province, Kunduz Province, and Baghlan Province.

Meanwhile, flood-affected residents say they are facing serious difficulties after losing their homes, farmland, and livestock, and are calling on the government and humanitarian organizations for urgent assistance. According to them, many families urgently need shelter, food, and healthcare services.

OCHA also said that surveys and assessments are ongoing to identify the full scope of needs, adding that the delivery of assistance continues in coordination with national and international organizations.
