FIFA has announced that the Afghan women’s refugee football team, known as “Afghan Women United,” is now eligible to compete as the official women’s national football team of Afghanistan in international competitions.
The decision was made by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), under which the team is recognized as the official representative of Afghan women, despite the fact that most of its players left the country following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.
The squad consists of Afghan female footballers who are currently living in different countries and have continued their football activities under refugee conditions.
According to sports observers, this decision is seen as an important milestone for Afghan women, as it provides them the opportunity to represent their country on the international stage, even without an official domestic sports structure in place.
