UNICEF Warns Afghanistan Could Lose Thousands of Female Professionals Due to Restrictions

UNICEF has warned that if restrictions on girls’ education and women’s employment continue in Afghanistan, the country could lose nearly 25,000 female teachers and healthcare workers by 2030.

According to the UNICEF report, at least one million girls have already been affected by education restrictions, and the number could double by 2030 if the situation remains unchanged.

The report states that by 2030, around 20,000 female teachers and 5,400 female healthcare workers may leave their professions, representing nearly one-quarter of the female workforce recorded in 2021.

UNICEF emphasized that denying girls access to education will have serious negative consequences for the country’s education system, healthcare sector, and economy in the future.
