Pakistani fire kills and injures five children in eastern Afghanistan

At least five children have been killed and wounded after shells fired by Pakistani forces struck a refugee camp in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province, local sources say.

The incident happened at around 10:00am on Tuesday in the Hijrat Abad area of Khas Kunar district. According to local officials and residents, artillery rounds fired from the Pakistani side hit a civilian refugee camp, killing three children and injuring two others.

Residents said the camp was housing displaced civilians and that all of the victims were children. The wounded were taken to nearby medical centres, where the condition of some has been described as critical.

Local people have condemned the incident as a clear violation of humanitarian principles and have called for an immediate and impartial investigation.

So far, authorities in Pakistan have not issued any official response to the reports.
