Bennett Calls ICC Arrest Warrants for Some Taliban Leaders Significant

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, says the issuance of additional arrest warrants against senior Taliban officials is a very significant step.

Bennett added that the analysis of persecution on the grounds of gender and its application to the Taliban’s policies and practices is also of particular significance.

Meanwhile, Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid condemned the move, saying that the Taliban does not recognize any court called the International Criminal Court and does not attach any importance to its decisions.

On October 5, the International Criminal Court unsealed arrest warrants against Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, Chief Justice Abdul Hakim Haqqani, Minister of Higher Education Neda Mohammad Nadim, and Minister of Education Habibullah Agha in connection with the situation in Afghanistan.

The court said the warrants are related to allegations of crimes against humanity, particularly persecution on the grounds of gender.
